Acute Abdominal Pain and Analgesia: A Critical Review Acute abdominal pain: An insight Acute abdominal pain is a nociceptive pain response and is one of the commonest presentations seen in the primary outpatient care and emergency settings. It is the presenting complaint in ~1.5% of office-based visits and in about 5% of emergency department visits.1Cartwright SL, Knudson MP. Evaluation of acute abdominal pain in adults. Am Fam Physician. 2008;77(7):971-8.   In both these settings, the condition can be reflective of a wide array of underlying disorders, ranging from benign, selflimited disease forms to life-threatening emergencies relevant to specialist care.2Cartwright SL, Knudson MP. 2. Male Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms in Primary Care Setting
Lower urinary tract symptoms in men:An overview Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) are described as a cluster of urinary symptoms that are classified into three general categories: voiding, storage, and postmicturation symptoms (Table1). Males show an increased propensity to develop LUTS with varied presentation as their age advances. The global increase in the ageing population has contributed linearly to the prevalence of LUTS in older men. It is estimated that 90% of men between 45 and 80 years of age have LUTS. The cause of LUTS in males is mutlifactorial.1Dimitropoulos K, Gravas S. New therapeutic strategies for the treatment of male lower urinary tract symptoms.
