Hemorrhoid Disease: Role of the Gastroenterologist

Hemorrhoids, defined as the symptomatic enlargement and distal displacement of the normal anal cushions, constitute one of the most common anorectal disorders. Hemorrhoids represent a major medical and socioeconomic problem. Available data suggest that about 50% of the population would have encountered hemorrhoids at some point in their life; the peak incidence of this disease for both genders is from 45 to 65 years.
