COVID-19 and the Kidneys: The Renal Impact

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has caused substantial damage to the health system globally. Though SARS-CoV-2 primarily affects the lungs, it can also affect other organs such as intestines, kidneys, heart and brain. Kidney dysfunctions are also observed in a large proportion of COVID-19 patients. In fact, there is mounting evidence to support that patients with kidney diseases are particularly vulnerable to COVID-19. The vulnerability of patients with diagnosed kidney conditions, with its associated complications, to SARS-CoV-2, is now known. The vulnerability of these patients is attributed to associated comorbidities like diabetes, hypertension and immunosuppressive therapies, among other conditions, that impair their immune system and cause their kidneys to fail.
