Nephrolithiasis, or kidney stones, is one of the most common conditions affecting the urinary system. It is mostly caused by a crystal or crystalline concretion (renal calculi) migrating from the kidney along the urinary tract and becoming stuck creating an obstruction to urinary flow. This obstruction causes proximal ureteral and renal pelvic dilation resulting in the immediate and intense pain known as renal colic. Renal colic is one of the most painful events in a person’s life and is one of the most common presentations of acute pain in emergency.
