Metabolic Bone Disorders in Children with Inflammatory Bowel Diseases

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) that include Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, often begin in childhood but are lifelong conditions. The implications of IBD are of particular importance in children because of the potential negative effects on growth, development, psychosocial function, and overall wellbeing. The incidence and prevalence of IBD is increasing, and 20-30% of cases present before the age of 20 years. It is also noteworthy that IBD starting in childhood is associated with more extensive disease, higher disease activity, and a more complicated course than adult onset IBD. Besides, significantly increasing incidence of Crohn’s disease in the pediatric population, including infants, coupled to an ill-defined etiology, is particularly a big cause of concern.
