Lactase Enzyme Deficiency in Pediatric GI Disorders

Lactase enzyme deficiency is commonly correlated with intestinal lactase deficiency and dietary lactose malabsorption. It is identified by lactose intolerance, the inability to digest lactose resulting in one or more GI symptoms after the lactose ingestion. Patients must be counselled and reassured that ingestion of lactose does not cause permanent damage and there is no need for a totally lactose-free or severely restricted diet.
