Overview Chronic kidney disease (CKD), associated with high morbidity and mortality due to underlying metabolic bone disorders is known to affect between 8 and 16% of adults worldwide and is increasing in incidence.1-3 Bone mineral disorder (BMD), osteoporosis and fragility fractures, including hip and vertebral fractures are associated with CKD, with the fracture risk being increased in those on dialysis with incidence rates of fractures ranging from 12 to 45/1000 patient-years. CKD is also associated with frailty and falls, fall injuries as well as muscle strength and flexibility markers including functional reach.
Overview Nephrolithiasis, or kidney stones, represent a common, prevalent health condition, with an annual incidence of about eight cases per 1,000 adults. The disorder is further associated with an increased risk of other more serious kidney problems including chronic kidney diseases and end-stage renal failure. In India, the incidence of kidney stones is comparatively low in the southern part of country, and high prevalence areas include Maharashtra and Rajasthan. The recurrence rate of kidney stones has been reported to be about 50% within 5 years; individuals with metabolic disorders are at a higher risk for recurrence. Box 1 depicts some…
