Urinary Urgency and its Measurement in the Overactive Bladder Symptom Syndrome: Current Concepts and Future Prospects

Overactive bladder syndrome (OAB) is a highly prevalent condition. As per International Continence Society (ICS), overactive bladder syndrome is defined as urinary urgency, with or without urge incontinence, usually with increased daytime frequency and nocturia, and there is no proven infection or obvious pathology.1 The overall prevalence of overactive bladder syndrome is approximately 12%.1 Dry OAB (urgency without urinary incontinence) is more prevalent in males whereas wet OAB has high prevalence in females.2 The differing prevalence of incontinence is presumed to be due to the relative weakness of the bladder neck and urethral sphincter mechanism in females.
