Biomarkers for Detection and Risk Stratification of the Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men worldwide. In fact, according to the available reports, it is the most often diagnosed male cancer in almost 112 countries and the leading cancer-related death in 48 countries. Although the developed countries have thus far the highest incidence rates of prostate cancer, with comparatively low mortality rates; prostate cancer in the Asian population seems to have both high incidence and mortality rates. In India, incidence of the prostate cancer seems to be increasing especially in the urban population, with variations in disease characteristics and mortality. Therefore, there is a need to have efficient measures for an early diagnosis of this common and malignant condition, so that a treatment decision can be considered effectively and efficiently. This short review presents a discussion on some of the current and emerging biomarkers for prostate cancer that can help in its timely diagnosis.
