BPH, a non-malignant prostatic enlargement seen among aging men, is characterized by smooth muscle and epithelial cell proliferation in the transition zone of the gland. Compression of the urethra and bladder outflow obstruction lead to the presentation of LUTS, urinary retention, or infections. Disrupted homeostasis between prostatic cell growth and cell death leads to BPH. There is an imbalance that promotes cell proliferation. Testicular androgens are involved in the development of BPH.
